PRESS RELEASE DGPC, BPC and Hyosung Heavy Industries Sign Tripartite MoU to Strengthen GIS System Services and Capacity Building
Thimphu, June 20, 2026: Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC), Bhutan Power Corporation Limited (BPC), and Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation, South Korea, today entered into a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Thimphu to establish a framework for cooperation aimed at strengthening Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) system services and technical capacity development in Bhutan.
The MoU marks an important step towards enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of GIS operations across hydropower plants and substations in Bhutan. The collaboration will focus on preventive and corrective maintenance of GIS systems, the supply of spare parts and technical components, and the training and certification of Bhutanese engineers and technicians.
The signing ceremony was graced by Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Hon’ble Minister for the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR), Royal Government of Bhutan, and attended by the Chairman of Druk Holding & Investments Ltd. (DHI), along with senior officials and representatives from DGPC, BPC, and Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation.
Addressing the gathering, Lyonpo Gem Tshering highlighted the importance of adopting evolving technologies and developing national technical capabilities to support Bhutan’s growing energy sector. He emphasized that, as Bhutan expands its power infrastructure to meet future energy security and economic growth objectives, such institutional partnerships will be critical in meeting long-term energy requirements and strengthening the technical expertise and maintenance capabilities of Bhutanese professionals.
Speaking at the occasion, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of DGPC, highlighted the importance of the partnership in strengthening Bhutan’s power sector and supporting long-term technical self-reliance. He noted that, beyond GIS maintenance services and capacity building, there are opportunities to expand collaboration into other technologies in which Hyosung has extensive expertise. Hyosung’s establishment in Pune, India, is also expected to play a key role in providing these services.
Mr. Sonam Tobjey, Chief Executive Officer of BPC, noted that strengthening maintenance systems and technical competencies is essential to delivering reliable and quality electricity services throughout the country. He highlighted that partnerships with international technology providers are instrumental in advancing Bhutan’s power sector and preparing for future energy needs.
Mr. Junill Yoon, Vice President of Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Bhutan’s power sector through the supply of high-quality products, reliable technical services, knowledge transfer, and long-term collaboration. He highlighted the increasing global demand for clean energy and emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships to support sustainable growth and future opportunities in the energy sector.
Following the signing of the MoU, DGPC and BPC will work towards entering into separate definitive agreements with Hyosung outlining implementation arrangements, service scope, timelines, and commercial terms for future collaboration activities.
