PRESS RELEASE: Key Contracts Signed for 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project as Implementation Advances under the 5,000 MW Hydropower Partnership Framework between DGPC and Adani Power Limited
Thimphu, Bhutan | 24 June 2026: Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL) has achieved a major milestone in the implementation of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project with the signing of two key contracts that will advance the project’s design and early construction activities.
WHPL signed a consultancy agreement with Lahmeyer International GmbH, Germany, appointing the company as the Design Consultant for the project. Under the agreement, Lahmeyer will provide comprehensive engineering design, technical review, construction support, and advisory services throughout the implementation period. The contract is valued at BTN 298.73 million.
WHPL also signed a contract agreement with Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC), India, for the execution of the Diversion Tunnel Works, including hydromechanical gates and upstream and downstream cofferdams ahead of the commencement of the main civil works package. The contract value for the diversion works is BTN 1,269.50 million.
Earlier in March 2026, WHPL awarded contracts for the construction of access roads to various project components to Bhutanese contractors – Chimi RD Construction Pvt. Ltd. and Hi-Tech Company Pvt. Ltd. The early commencement of these works has enabled access to the diversion tunnel area and facilitated the mobilization of resources for project implementation. The access roads are scheduled for completion by November 2026, ahead of the expected mobilization of the main civil works contractors later this year.
The 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project, located downstream of the Tala Hydropower Plant under Chhukha Dzongkhag, is the first project being implemented under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) and Adani Power Limited in January 2026 to jointly identify, develop, and invest in up to 5,000 MW of hydropower generation capacity in Bhutan.
Speaking at the occasion, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director DGPC & Chairman WHPL, said that the signing of these contracts demonstrates the project’s transition to full-scale implementation and reflected the commitment of all stakeholders to deliver the project safely, efficiently, and in keeping with international standards.
The Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project is expected to contribute significantly to Bhutan’s long-term energy security, economic growth, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. DGPC and Adani Power reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the Wangchhu Project while pursuing the development of additional hydropower projects under the broader 5,000 MW partnership framework.
