Signing of the Khorlochhu E&M Contract Agreement with Andritz Hydro
Paro, June 27: The main Electro-Mechanical Contract agreement for the 600 MW Khorlochhu project was signed between Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited (KHPL) and Andritz Hydro Private Limited, India on 27 June 2026 at Paro. The contract package includes the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of electro-mechanical works for the Khorlochhu project within a timeline of 39 months. Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources presided over the signing ceremony in the presence of senior management from Andritz Hydro, KHPL, and DGPC and a few of its related subsidiaries.
The Khorlochhu project’s civil works, comprising mainly of the dam, power house and headrace tunnel, are progressing well. The power evacuation arrangements are being taken up by Bhutan Power Corporation Ltd. With the award of the electro-mechanical contract package, the Khorlochhu project enters into an integrated construction stage requiring continuous coordination of the interfaces between the civil, electro-mechanical, and hydro-mechanical works.
The signing marked another milestone in the Khorlochhu project’s ongoing efforts to complete the construction within an overall timeline of five years.
Addressing the gathering, Lyonpo Gem Tshering highlighted the importance of such strategic partnerships and technology-driven collaboration in supporting Bhutan’s long-term energy ambitions, and it further reflected the country’s commitment to sustainable hydropower development, strengthening technical capabilities and creating greater value for future generations.
DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin stated that the agreement represented an important milestone for the Khorlochhu project. He said that collaborations with global partners such as Andritz Hydro create immense opportunities for knowledge transfer, capacity building, and access to evolving technologies that were essential to achieving Bhutan’s plans and aspirations in the energy sector.
Mr. Frederic Sauze, Executive Board Member of the Global ANDRITZ Group and CEO, ANDRITZ HYDRO GmbH, conveyed Andritz Hydro’s happiness and confidence in their ongoing partnerships with DGPC and Bhutan’s energy sector.
