Thimphu, August 5, 2025 — Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) convened a stakeholder awareness meeting today at Khasadrapchhu Middle Secondary School, Maedwang Gewog, Thimphu, to engage key stakeholders in the development of the 120 MWp Jamjee Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project.
The meeting, attended by around 50 participants, included 21 representatives from the nearby villages of Tsiphu and Tenchekha, people from adjoining villages who own land in the surrounding areas, officials from Bhutan Power Corporation Ltd, Green Digital Ltd, and local government representatives including the Dasho Dzongdag of Thimphu Dzongkhag and the Gups of Maedwang Gewog under Thimphu and Dogar Gewog under Paro.
DGPC presented an overview of Bhutan’s energy sector challenges, particularly the seasonal electricity demand-supply gap during the winter months. The Jamjee Solar PV Project is a key part of Bhutan’s overall strategy to diversify its energy mix that is aligned to the National Energy Policy 2025 and the Renewable Energy Development Roadmap 2040.
Participants were briefed on the technical, environmental, social, and commercial aspects of the project, including the Environmental and Social Management Plans to mitigate potential impacts. DGPC assured that the project would work very closely with all the stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of the public, if any, were addressed.
The project’s construction has been awarded to the HILD-Rigsar Consortium under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract signed on July 15, 2025. Scheduled for completion within 18 months, the plant is expected to generate approximately 197 GWh of clean electricity annually.
Of the estimated cost of Nu. 4,703 million for the project, the European Investment Bank will provide 50% of the financing through a concessional loan under the Hydro and Solar Energy Facility that was signed in April 2024. DGPC will provide the balance 50% of the financing through its own resources.
This landmark initiative represents a major leap toward Bhutan’s renewable energy goals, especially in solar, and reflects the nation’s commitment to responsible and forward-looking development.
The awareness meeting concluded with the unanimous support of the local communities and stakeholders, who welcomed the initiative as a step toward energy self-sufficiency and overall socio-economic development aspirations of the people of Bhutan.
