DHyE Hands Over Burgangchhu and Yungichhu Hydropower Projects for Operation
Thimphu, 5 September 2026: Druk Hydro Energy Limited (DHyE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC), has officially handed over the 54 MW Burgangchhu Hydropower Project (BHPP) and the 32 MW Yungichhu Hydropower Project (YHPP) to DGPC’s Operation & Maintenance Services Centre (O&MSC), marking the successful completion of the projects’ development and construction phase and their transition into regular operation.
The handover took place at the DGPC Corporate Office in Thimphu, in the presence of Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director, DGPC, senior officials from DGPC and DHyE, and the respective project teams.
The 54 MW Burgangchhu Hydropower Project in Zhemgang comprises two 27 MW generating units and is expected to generate 260 GWh of electricity annually. Both units were successfully commissioned in 2026.

he 32 MW Yungichhu Hydropower Project in Lhuentse, comprising two 16 MW units, is projected to generate 157 GWh annually. Both units were commissioned in 2026 and have since entered commercial operation.
Beyond power generation, the two projects have contributed to the development of surrounding communities during construction. Community support initiatives included improvements to roads and connectivity, land and crop compensation, water and sanitation facilities, environmental restoration, and support for local cultural, religious and community infrastructure.
The handover marks an important milestone in DGPC’s Phase I Small Hydropower Programme, which includes the 18 MW Suchhu, 54 MW Burgangchhu and 32 MW Yungichhu Hydropower Projects. The completion of these projects demonstrates the growing technical capability and self-reliance of Bhutanese professionals in developing and delivering hydropower projects.
The successful completion of these projects provides valuable experience and strengthened technical capacity for the next phases of small and medium hydropower development. Together, they represent another step towards building a secure, sustainable and increasingly self-reliant renewable energy future for Bhutan, while contributing to DGPC’s broader ambition of achieving 25 GW of installed generation capacity by 2040.
